Spring. Still need convincing that it’s really here? A trip to Mount Usher Gardens in Ashford, Co Wicklow will fill you with the joys of the season – and may prove to be a fab Mother’s Day jaunt.

Unleash the kids and let them stray off the main paths, up and down steps through 22 acres of organically managed gardens. This is a world-class example of an informal Robinsonian garden, dotted with charming bridges and follies, in the sheltered valley of the Vartry River. Just opened for the 2010 season, it’s currently carpeted with snowdrops and crocuses, but later in spring you can expect spectacular displays of magnolias and rhododendrons, among its pre-eminent plant collection.
Taken over in recent years by the Pratt family of Avoca fame, Mount Usher now boasts an Avoca-run café, deli and garden shop, as well as a collection of other charming retailers around the entrance courtyard, selling everything from country clothing and furniture to natural health products and quirky gifts. The café caters well for children, with kiddie specials on the menu (meal and drink €7.95). High chairs and changing facilities are available. For the grown-ups, a good selection of the usual home-cooked Avoca dishes are on offer, as well as treats such as prosecco with raspberries by the glass. In warmer weather, these can all be enjoyed at outdoor tables.
Gardens open from end of February to end of October, 10:30 am – 5:20 pm. Admission: adults €7.50, children €3.00 (under fours go free). Much of the garden is buggy-accessible. Café and shopping courtyard open all year (free entry). -KT
