There’s a bit of mystery about Balrath Woods, just off the N2 near Ashbourne. It is an ancient forest with trails suitable for little feet or bikes. Dotted between the trees you’ll find swings, a wobble bridge, and wooden horses.

Search further to find a climbing frame so impressive you’ll want to climb it yourself to take in the view. And if, as a child, you fell in love with Blyton’s Faraway Tree, you’ll love the centre tree, a giant maple with a fantastical snake pit of gnarly roots for all to climb and play upon. You may even wonder it there are fairies about when your tiny explorers discover huts among the trees with little twig creations dangling above.
This enchanted wood combines family perfect features; children can run safe in the fresh air away from cars, there are picnic facilities, and parking. For school-going children, download activities from the Balrath Woods website teaching children the importance of preserving our native woods.
Balrath Woods is very close to Pudden Hill Activity Centre (on the other side of the N2), so perfect for a day trip. -ST
